The sad facts about the growing problem of unwanted pets in the United States are:  Each year, 6-8 million dogs and cats are turned in to animal shelters or picked up by animal control.  Over half of the healthy, adoptable animals are euthanized because there are not enough homes available.  25% of all dogs in shelters are purebreds, not mixed breeds.  Over a 6 year period, 1 female dog and 1 male dog plus their offspring can produce 67,000 puppies.  For cats, the number is an astounding 420,000!
